❣️ Tested in our home by Chris & Candy:

>See how we review products<

Our old natural gas BBQ didn’t make the move, and cooking inside every night just didn’t feel the same. Chris really wanted a large grill again, something strong enough for steaks, burgers, and slow-smoked weekends.

After comparing a few models in the same price range, we chose the Royal Gourmet GA6402H 6-Burner BBQ Gas Grill from Walmart because it looked like a solid upgrade without going into luxury pricing.

We bought it with our own money and tested it ourselves to see if it could truly replace what we had before.

How It Performed in Everyday Use

What We Noticed After Multiple Uses

Over the last few weeks, we’ve used this propane grill about six times. We’ve cooked regular BBQ meals and even used it as a smoker.

It arrived fully boxed and had to be assembled from scratch. With Candy organizing the parts and Chris handling the tools, assembly went smoother than expected.

The grill heats up fast and gives a lot of cooking space, which we love for family-style meals. Chris used it more during testing, especially when experimenting with smoking meat.

At first, we noticed heat escaping from the back where the lid closes. That made it harder to keep a steady temperature. Chris added a simple aluminum foil barrier in that gap, and it made a big difference.

We also replaced the original pressure regulator with a better-quality one after the first one acted up. Once those two issues were fixed, the grill started performing much better.

What We Liked and What Needed Adjusting

Where It Performed Well

What worked well?

The size is generous, the six burners allow different heat zones, and the sear burner is great for finishing steaks. For the price, it feels strong and capable.

Compared to our previous natural gas grill, performance is about the same once properly adjusted. What didn’t work well?

The heat loss from the back is real, and the stock regulator wasn’t reliable in our case.

This grill fits well for cooking, BBQing, and smoking at home, especially if you enjoy hands-on tweaking.

We’ve tested other grills before, and this one sits comfortably in the “good value after setup” category.

Would We Use It Again

So, would we use it again? Yes.

Would we repurchase it? Yes, especially knowing what small upgrades improve it.

After the adjustments, our score went from a 5.0 to a solid 9.0. It now works like a champ. It fits an everyday backyard lifestyle, from casual dinners to weekend smoking projects.

Recently, we slow-smoked an 8 lb prime rib on it, and it came out just under medium rare (like Chris likes it) with perfect smoke flavor.

That was the moment we felt confident keeping it long term.

Our Testing and Transparency

We purchased this grill with our own money and tested it in real backyard cooking sessions.

We made real adjustments, documented performance changes, and based this review on hands-on experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Royal Gourmet GA6402H worth it?

Out of the box, performance is average due to minor heat loss and the stock regulator. After sealing the rear gap and upgrading the regulator, temperature control improves significantly. Once adjusted, it becomes a strong mid-range option for everyday backyard cooking.

  • Does the Royal Gourmet GA6402H hold heat well?

Heat retention is moderate at first because of a small gap at the rear lid edge. After addressing that issue, it maintains a steady temperature much more consistently. With proper setup, heat control becomes reliable for regular cooking sessions.

  • Can you use the Royal Gourmet GA6402H for slow cooking or smoking?

Yes, it can handle light smoking projects once heat control is stabilized. After making small adjustments, we were able to maintain steady temperature for extended cooking sessions without major fluctuations.

  • What are the main drawbacks of the Royal Gourmet GA6402H?

The main drawbacks are rear heat loss out of the box and the stock pressure regulator, which may need upgrading. These are not structural flaws, but they do require small adjustments for optimal performance.

  • How reliable has it been after adjustments?

After upgrading the regulator and sealing the rear heat gap, performance became much more stable. During multiple backyard cooking sessions, temperature consistency improved and overall results were dependable.

  • Is this grill better than a natural gas setup?

Performance is comparable once adjusted. The main difference comes down to fuel source and setup preference. With proper tuning, cooking results are similar to what we experienced with our previous natural gas model.

  • Who is this grill best suited for?

It works best for people comfortable making small adjustments during setup. Once dialed in, it performs well for everyday backyard cooking and occasional longer sessions.
